Kournas.

This circular walk starts in the central square of the old village of Kournas, which is situated in the magical landscape of the Apokoronas. 

At first we will follow a concrete and slightly hilly path towards the St. John church, from where after a while we will enter a hidden gem: The Azilakas forest, one of the biggest endemic Azilakas oak tree forest in Crete. These amazing trees reaching heights up to 25 metres. 

We will follow a path parallel to a gentle stream, where you can enjoy the beauty of this forest and where the silence breaks by the singing of the birds.

To enjoy our break, we leave the forest for a while behind us and enter the nearby charming village of Kastellos, rich in history and where once was a Venetian fortress. 

After visiting the village – we will pick up again our walk through the forest and on dirt roads we will head back to Kournas, where we will have lunch in Maria’s tavern. 

This hike will give you an enriching experience and you will be amazed by the panoramic views of the Psiloritis, the White Mountains, the Aegean sea and the surrounding villages!
